Schools Sanctuary Award
In Autumn 2024 we began taking steps towards building a welcoming and inclusive community by working towards the Schools of Sanctuary Award.

As part of our commitment to this, RWBA signed the City of Sanctuary Organisation Pledge which states:

We support the ‘City of Sanctuary’ vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.
We endorse the City of Sanctuary Charter, and agree to act in accordance with City of Sanctuary values and apply the network principles within our work (as far as our specific context enables us to).
We recognise the contribution of people seeking sanctuary. Sanctuary seekers are welcomed, included and supported within our context.
What is a School of Sanctuary?
A School of Sanctuary is part of the national City of Sanctuary movement dedicated to making the UK a welcoming place of safety for all and a place that is proud to offer support for those fleeing violence and persecution.

The School of Sanctuary initiative celebrates the good practice of schools that welcome all who have been forcibly displaced and that are committed to fostering empathy and active inclusion ensuring that everyone plays a role in welcoming those in need of sanctuary into our school community.

Why become a School of Sanctuary?
Working towards becoming a School of Sanctuary is an opportunity to create a clearer understanding of what it means to seek sanctuary; it provides learning opportunities around human rights and social justice. Furthermore, it encourages students to actively engage in student voice and citizenship.
To gain a better understanding, see the link below highlighting Bristol’s schools of sanctuary who are transforming education by creating inclusive and welcoming environments for all students.

At RWBA we aim to:

-
Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all people seeking sanctuary
-
Foster empathy and understanding by educating our students about the experiences of displaced people
-
Promote the voices of people seeking sanctuary and celebrate their contribution to our community
-
Build an understanding of experiences of displaced people and help to combat stereotyping relating to refugees and asylum seekers
-
Provide support and resources to help people seeking sanctuary feel safe, supported and able to thrive within our school
-
Work in partnership with local organisations to build on our commitment to being a School of Sanctuary
