National Teaching School

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy was accredited as a Teaching School in September 2013. We are the lead school for the North Wiltshire Teaching School Alliance (NWiTS) which is an alliance of 11 primary and 2 secondary schools. The schools in the alliance are:

  • Longleaze Primary School
  • Lydiard Millicent Primary School
  • Lyneham Primary School
  • Noremarsh Primary School

  • St Mary’s Primary School
  • St Sampson’s Primary and Infant Schools
  • Wootton Bassett Infant School

(We do also place ITT trainees in other North Wiltshire Schools)

Our vision for our Teaching School alliance is one where

  • Professional development of staff from Initial teacher Training through to development of new and existing Headteachers is of the highest quality, equally important and focused on student outcomes;
  • Schools work together to support and challenge one another resulting in more outstanding schools due to rapid and sustained progress for all students;
  • Joint practice development is integral to all teachers, and this work transcends the alliance and not only draws on expertise but also impacts on professionals form outside our own alliance to achieve the moral purpose of benefitting ALL young people, regardless of their school.

All Teaching Schools have to set targets and implement strategies to successfully achieve nationally set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in the following 6 areas (The Big 6):

1.      Initial Teacher Training

2.      Continuous Professional Development

3.      School to School support

4.      Specialist Leaders of Education

5.      Leadership Development and Succession Planning

6.      Research and Development

Our broad intentions and focus areas within these 6 areas are:

1.      Initial Teacher Training (ITT)

  • Recruit and train new teachers using schools direct and university PGCE programmes (Bath Spa University, Bristol University)
  • Current vacancies in Primary General and Secondary PE, Drama, English, Maths, Social Science, Engineering, MFL, Art and Design, Computer Science and Chemistry
  • Investigate the feasibility of becoming a School Centred Initial Teacher Training centre (SCITT)

2.      Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

  • Identify Areas of Outstanding Practice across and beyond the alliance and use them to address needs within the alliance
  • Develop on-going CPD activities which build on and sustain momentum of an Alliance Learning Conference
  • Develop programmes to improve teaching and learning (ITP/OTP/OFP)
  •  Advertise and market CPD events within and beyond the alliance

3.      School to School support

  • Establish formal links between areas of strength and areas of need within the alliance
  • Undertake annual Peer Reviews of all schools within the alliance

4.      Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs)

  • Based on need and expertise, recruit, train and deploy SLEs

5.      Leadership Development and Succession Planning

  • Devise leadership development programmes
  • Facilitate Leadership Coaching for existing leaders
  • Establish Leadership Directory to track leadership across alliance

6.      Research and Development (R&D)

  • Undertake disciplined R&D projects with a view to impacting on local, regional, national and international practice
